Cougars sending 21 wrestlers to State

The Alder Creek Middle School wrestling team qualified 21 wrestlers to compete in the state championship at Yerington High School on Saturday.

Alder Creek is ranked fourth in the state and will be trying to beat No. 1-ranked Winnemucca, No. 2 Yerington and No. 3 Carson. The top four wrestlers in each weight division will earn medals individually.

The following Alder Creek wrestlers from the sixth and seventh grades qualified to compete:

Alex Davis (70 pounds), Sam Mohun (75), Thor Retzlaff (90), Scotty Lebel (95), Justin Carter (95), Spencer Pearson (100 ), Tyler Curtis (110), Nico Duner (115), Nick Arnone (120), Javier Virrey (125), Julian Thomas (135), and Blake Crosby (HWT).

Alder Creek eighth-grade wrestlers include Steven Baker (95 pounds), Brooks Hudson (100), Stein Retzlaff (115), Ty Englert (115), Max Collinson (125), Zakk Ray (135), Jose Vidaca (140), Carlos Ramirez (150), and Tyler Cavaness (175).

Wrestlers to watch include Virrey and Crosby, who are both undefeated and are carrying No. 1 ranking into the tournament.

Collinson gave teammate Javier his toughest match of the year in overtime and is one to watch. Hudson made it to the finals last year and is having a great second half of the season. Ramirez also made it to the finals last year along with Retzlaff, who has made it to the finals in every tournament.
