Council considers Palisades signal

JOHN A. BAYLESS, Sierra Sun

It’s been a long time coming, but residents of Sierra Meadows may soon have a traffic signal to protect them as they pull out onto Highway 267.

Truckee Town Council will consider advertising the Highway 267/Palisades Drive signal project for construction bids during its meeting tonight at Town Hall.

In a report to council, Town Engineer Dan Wilkins said the design engineering for the project is substantially complete, as are the construction bid documents.

Wilkins said utility companies are in the process of relocating their service lines to make way for the signal.

He requested that council also authorize town staff to pre-order the traffic signal poles and arms to complete the project.

“These items typically require 12 to 16 weeks to be delivered,” Wilkins said. “Staff does not anticipate selection of a construction contractor until Aug. 5. By pre-ordering the signal poles and mast arms, the project opening would occur 8 weeks earlier than if we make this an item of work for the construction contractor.”

The project cost is expected to be about $300,000 – of which Caltrans will provide about $200,000. The town would pay the remaining $100,000 out of road impact funds.

If council approves bid advertisement for the project tonight, the bids would be opened July 25.
