Council to hear result of police department study

Truckee Town Council will hear the results of a feasibility study for a town police department during a special meeting at 2 p.m. tomorrow.

The study, conducted by Lewis McRary Partners, will present the pros and cons of Truckee having its own police department, instead of its current contract arrangement with Nevada County.

Under the current system, the commander of the Nevada County Sheriff’s substation in Truckee also serves as the Truckee Police Chief, and deputies enforce town ordinances.

Items included in the study include the cost of having a town police station, the options for a town jail, as well as a look at other facets of a potential police department. No action will be taken by council at the meeting.

Council will also convene for its regular meeting at 6 p.m. in town hall.

On the consent calendar are the following items:

– CDF Wildland Fire Annual Agreement. Council will consider adopting a resolution to authorize Truckee Fire Protection District Chief Mike Terwilliger to execute an agreement for a term of one year.

– Authorize a funding request to the Department of Conservation, Division of Recycling, for a $5,000 grant.

– Ratification of Nevada County Transportation Commission’s annual work program.
