County buys land for juvenile hall

TIM WILLIS, Sun News Service

Nevada County recently closed escrow on land near the Rood Administrative Center in Nevada City, where it will build a new juvenile hall, County Administrator David Brennan announced in a prepared statement.

The county paid $85,000 to the Furano family to buy approximately 10 acres at 15658 American Hill Road, directly west of the Nevada City Elks Club along Highway 49.

The land lies outside of Nevada City’s boundary, but could eventually be annexed to the city.

Construction is set to begin in early 2000 on the new juvenile hall, which is expected to open by the summer of 2001.

This was not the first site sought for the project.

The county had a tentative agreement to buy a 50-acre piece of land nearby, a pact which never materialized.

County officials could not be reached Wednesday evening for comment on why the earlier deal collapsed.

However, Brennan had previously indicated there were conditions of the earlier agreement that had not been met.
