Courthouse evacuated after bomb threat

ABHUTCHISON, Sierra Sun

The Joseph Center was forced to evacuate all personnel last Friday when a courthouse employee received an anonymous phone call at approximately 12:45 p.m. claiming a bomb would go off in the building at 2 p.m.

The Nevada County Sheriff’s Office evacuated the building at 1 p.m. while sheriff’s deputies did a thorough check of the premises.

“We went over and checked the building and couldn’t find anything,” NCSO Lt. Dave Baxley said. “Deputies did a cursory search for anything unusual.”

The Joseph Center, which houses many Nevada County government offices as well as the Nevada County Superior Court, is located on Levon Avenue, next to the sheriff’s substation and the county library.

Employees were evacuated for approximately an hour and a half until the building was determined safe to enter before 3 p.m. Truckee Fire Protection District crews were also present at the scene.

According to the NCSO sheriff’s log report, there was a report that a male subject was overheard that afternoon at a local deli stating that if he had a bomb he would put it in the courthouse. Whether there is a connection between that reported comment and the bomb threat incident is unknown, Baxley said.

“We’re tracking down all leads and so far we haven’t come up with anything,” Baxley said.

According to courthouse staff, this is the first bomb threat the Joseph Center has received.
