10-year-old Truckee boy arrested on suspicion of arson

TRUCKEE, Calif. — At about 9 a.m. Wednesday, fire and police officials responded to a report of a small grass fire in a vacant yard on Copenhagen Drive in Tahoe Donner.

The fire was quickly put out, according to a Truckee Fire statement, but investigators then located numerous other smoldering areas nearby.

An investigation led Truckee Police detectives to a local school, officials said, where a 10-year-old Truckee boy was identified as the suspect who intentionally set the fires.

The boy was arrested on suspicion of arson and released to the custody of his parents. According to police, the matter will be referred to the Nevada County Probation Department.

The incident serves as a reminder of the extreme fire danger the region faces this year, police said, and “intentionally and/or recklessly set fires will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”
