A bicyclist was in serious condition late Sunday night after being struck by a passing Jeep on Highway 28 east of Tahoe City, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The driver of the Jeep, a 35-year-old Tahoe City resident, was arrested, after fleeing the scene of the accident, according to the CHP. Alcohol may have been a factor in the crash, said CHP Officer Steve Skeen.

Skeen did not release the name of the driver.

Both the cyclist and the motorist were traveling west on the highway near Lake Forest at 11:10 p.m., when the accident occurred, Skeen said.

The impact threw the cyclist out of the roadway, he said.

Due to the extent of the cyclist’s injuries, his identity is unknown and local law enforcement is asking for help from the public in identifying him. He was airlifted to Washoe Medical Center from the scene by Care Flight with serious head injuries. Officials did not know if he was wearing a helmet.

The cyclist was on a Specialized mountain bike, wrapped in camouflage tape, said Skeen.

“The bicycle itself was not unique, but what he had on it was unique,” said Skeen.

Anyone with any knowledge of the identity of the cyclist or the circumstances of the accident is asked to call the Truckee California Highway Patrol at 582-7570.
