Dead man identified in Nevada County pot patch shootout

NEVADA CITY ” Police have identified the Yuba County man killed in Saturday night’s pot patch shootout in the northern Nevada County as John Scott Shelton, 31, of Linda, Ca.

North San Juan resident Dusty Beck, 42, shot Shelton at close range with a shotgun as Shelton and at least one other person entered his home on the 11000 block of Tyler Foote Road attempting to steal his marijuana, sheriff’s investigators said.

North San Juan is located on the sparsely populated San Juan Ridge, which sits above the South Yuba and North Yuba river canyons south of Highway 49.

Shelton was pronounced dead at the scene. Beck is recovering from two gunshot wounds to his abdomen and one shot to his leg at Sutter Roseville Medical Center. Beck was in serious condition Tuesday, hospital spokeswoman Robin Montgomery said.
