Decrease in gas prices brings relief for consumers

With recent summer gas prices costing people an arm and a leg, a decrease in prices across the state is a welcome relief for consumer pocket books.

The statewide average gas price for a gallon of regular unleaded is $2.96, down 26 cents from an Aug. 15 report, according to a report from AAA of Northern California. In Truckee the current average price for a gallon of regular unleaded costs $3.09.

Many Northern California communities are seeing prices dip below $3, however, South Lake Tahoe ranks the most expensive for September’s average fuel costs at $3.16 a gallon, according to the report.

Many South Shore gas stations were seeing prices drop below the $3 mark. Gas prices are typically 12 to 20 cents more in Lake Tahoe than in Carson City or Minden/Gardnerville.

“What can you do about it?” Tim Groden, of Truckee, said about fluctuating gas prices.

The steep price of filling up his pick-up truck “cuts into the profit margin” throughout his work week, Groden said.

AAA recommends consumers compare gas prices and shop around in order to get the best deal.

“I’m trying not to put too much in there now,” said Lillian Phillips of Truckee, who stopped to get gas at the Chevron station in town.

Phillips said “$3.09 is not too outrageous,” but she drives her car all over, from Sacramento to Reno, Nev., and the Bay Area to visit her grandchildren. She said she plans on filling up her tank in Reno, where prices are under $3.

So what caused the change? The report cited a number of factors, such as the cost of crude oil, the material used to make gas, has fallen in price by about 15 percent in the last few weeks. The uneventful hurricane season in the Atlantic thus far and calm in the Middle East for energy production purposes are some of the other outside factors affecting gas prices, according to AAA’s report.

With summer winding down, there is less consumer consumption after Labor Day weekend and the supply of gas and oil continues to rise, according to the report.

Nationwide, the average price for regular unleaded gas is $2.61.

Conserving energy and the amount of fuel used also helps keep gas prices down, according to AAA officials.
