Deputies thwart attempted suicide

Sun Staff

Deputies responding to the scene of an attempted suicide Saturday were able to save a man who had hanged himself from a stair railing at a home on Donner Pass Road.

According to police reports, Sgt. Bill Evans, Sgt. Tim Hargrove, Deputies Ron Smith, Marty Schoenberg and Ed York responded to the scene, and were directed into the house by the victim’s girlfriend.

Once inside the house they saw the victim hanging by the neck from a stair railing, with an orange extension cord around his neck. According to the report the victim’s face was light gray in color and he was completely motionless.

Evans went upstairs and cut the cord with his knife while Schoenberg lowered the man to the floor. Evans and Schoenberg performed resuscitation on the victim, who began breathing.

The victim was treated at the scene by paramedics and then transported to Tahoe Forest Hospital. Once there he was transported to Washoe Medical Center in Reno.

According to the victim’s girlfriend, they had been fighting earlier in the evening. He was out of her sight for a couple of minutes and when she went into the living room she saw him hanging. She tried to untie him and then called 9-1-1.
