Emma Garrard/Sierra SunConstruction is booming in the Truckee area, reflecting the population growth in Nevada, Placer and El Dorado counties, which outpaces growth in the rest of the Sierra Nevada.

El Dorado, Nevada, and Placer counties make up 72 percent of the Sierra Nevada region’s population, with about 495,000 residents as of 2000.

The three central Sierra counties are also the fastest growing, with a 33 percent increase in population from 1990 to 2000, compared to the 27 percent overall increase for the Sierra region, according to “The State of the Sierra,” a study issued by the Sierra Business Council

The publication also reported that the total population in the Sierra Nevada’s four regions was 819,000 in 2000, and is expected to surpass 1 million full-time residents by 2020.

With a current estimated population of 16,163, Truckee alone is projected to reach 25,280 by 2025, reaching a maximum of 28,520 sometime thereafter, according to the Truckee 2025 General Plan.
