With a major snowstorm expected to hit the Sierra Nevada Friday, the National Weather Service issued a statement summarizing the 15 heaviest snowstorms over the last 50 years.

Twice in the past half-century, the Tahoe Basin-Donner Summit area has been buried by storms that left more than 10 feet of snow over several days.

The champion is the Jan. 10-17, 1952, storm that dropped 149 inches of snow on Tahoe City (12 feet, 5 inches) and 141 inches at the Central Sierra Snow Lab in Soda Springs (11 feet, 9 inches).

The 1952 storm was notorious for stranding the City of San Francisco passenger train in the deep snow when a rotary plow broke down attempting to clear a path.

(Heavy snows in early 1936 also was responsible for a slide that knocked over the Pacific Limited train near Donner Summit, injuring three men, according to Gordon Richards of the Truckee-Donner Historical Society.)

More recently, a spring storm from March 28 to April 1, 1982, dropped 125.5 inches of snow on the Sierra Snow Lab (10 feet, 5 inches), with smaller amounts in the Basin and other areas east of the Sierra Crest.

Storms in other years dropped between 3 and 8 feet of snow on local areas.
