Diesel engine regulations loom

The California Air Resources Board has two proposals to reduce diesel engine emissions by 85 percent by 2020.

The board had original intentions to approve the measures in April, but due to growing concerns and unanswered questions, passage has been postponed until at least May.

Nevada County Fifth District Supervisor Ted Owens and Contractors Association of Truckee Tahoe President Mark Tanner are sponsoring a public meeting on the proposed statewide regulations that are expected to impact heavy-equipment owners.

The meeting will include a presentation from CARB manager Tony Brasil that will include the proposal’s impact on vehicles such as forklifts, backhoes, excavators and loaders. Topics of compliance, cost and timelines will also be covered, and there will be time for questions.

“Some of our members will be directly affected by this regulation change. We want to make sure our members and other area businesses know what to expect,” said Tanner. “Purchasing replacement vehicles or changing engines can be costly. We want to make sure CARB has . . . considered the economic impacts to small family-run companies.”

The public meeting is set for March 6, from 3 to 6 p.m., in the Council Chambers of the Truckee Town Hall, 10183 Truckee Airport Road.-
