Discover ‘Marishka’ in Truckee
Special to the Sun
TAHOE/TRUCKEE, Calif. — The artist known as Marishka (Marie Schweitzer) will showcase her artistry at Art Obsessions Gallery & Wine Bar Friday, May 24, 6-8 p.m., Saturday through Monday, May 25-27, 2-6 p.m. Marishka will paint live in the gallery, demonstrating her mixed-media techniques on specially prepared canvases and panels. She will work on paintings from her latest series that are inspired by her favorite subjects of the western high country aspen trees and water lily ponds.
“I spend a lot of time in nature hiking and discovering my painting inspiration from our local Sierra, Ruby Mountains of Nevada, and Rocky Mountains of Colorado. Lotus flowers and lily ponds have always been a source of inspiration for me throughout my fine art career,” said Marishka. “Recently I have been painting the koi fish from Sierra Water Gardens along the Truckee River in Reno, Nev. The peace and tranquil beauty of these subjects represent a spiritual nature for me which translates into my art.”
Marishka’s work is thick with heavy acrylic paint and mixed media applied in layers that give her work a unique tactile quality and three-dimensional depth.
“I like to use somewhat arbitrary, bold, vivid colors and layer interference paints throughout my painting process which gives an opalescent type of shimmer within the paintings. Japanese rice papers and ‘green’ recycled papers that I hand-paint have become an important element in my recent work. These wonderfully textured papers have become an integral part of my artworks, mainly as borders, so the works can hang as is, without additional framing,” explained Marishka.
The wine bar will be pouring a selection of wines to compliment your art experience. Art Obsessions Gallery & Wine Bar is located in Historic Downtown Truckee, 10052 Donner Pass Road.
