District to discuss calendar

ABHUTCHISON, Sierra Sun

The Tahoe-Truckee Education Association’s negotiating team has agreed to discuss the 2002-2003 school year in the Tahoe-Truckee Unified School District’s three-year calendar, which was approved with concern last month by the board to begin before Labor Day for all three years.

Board members were concerned that recent data showed there was a significant number of teachers, parents and classified employees who would appreciate beginning the school year after the holiday.

In a letter to the board, the negotiating team agreed to meet with the board at some point during the next school year. The possibility of starting school after Labor Day in 2002-2003 will be discussed.

Team members also explained their rationale for recommending all three years begin before Labor Day in the letter. The following reasons were given:

– Will now have a three-year calendar that is consistent and will allow families to plan accordingly.

– The August start time allows more teaching time to prepare students for the SAT 9.

– The third week of April Spring Break also allows TTUSD to block the teaching time around the SAT 9 testing window as we can give our students the best opportunity to score well.

– Allows for larger blocks of teaching time between vacations..

– It give more flexibility for staff development and to add on snow days at the end of the year.
