Donner man dies in crash

Christopher "Topher" Otis

A 10-year Donner Summit died Saturday after crashing in an evening motorcycle race near Sparks.

Christopher James Otis, known as “Topher” to his friends, was reportedly riding in an area approximately one mile from Winnemucca Ranch Road when he lost control of his motorcycle after failing to make a jump, the Washoe County Sheriff’s Department reported.

The crash was reported at 7:40 p.m.

Otis, 31, was reportedly participating in a “Harescrambles” race when the accident occurred.

Otis was an avid outdoorsman, working at Sugar Bowl in the ski patrol department and as a summer time rafting guide. He later founded the successful Summit Industrial Painting company.

A service will be held at Truckee-Tahoe Mortuary. For information call 587-4342. A public service will be held at Van Norden Meadow on Donner Summit off Soda Springs Road at 7 p.m. on Friday. Attendees are asked to bring a blanket to sit on.

An informal gathering will follow at Donner Summit Lodge.
