Driver killed in 1-80 rollover crash

A van rolled over on Interstate 80 near Soda Springs Tuesday night, killing the 75-year-old driver.

Authorities are investigating whether the driver, a resident of Kansas, fell asleep at the wheel, said CHP officer Steve Skeen.

The vehicle swung off of the right-hand shoulder, overcorrected and crashed into the embankment on the right-hand shoulder, said Skeen.

The wreck spread debris over the westbound lanes of Interstate 80, and lanes were closed to allow a helicopter to land, said Skeen.

Investigators will continue to look into the cause of the crash and are asking any witnesses to the accident to call the Truckee CHP office at 582-7500.
