Durland , W.R. ‘Bill’

W.R. “Bill” Durland passed away on Nov. 15, 2006 after a long, bravely fought battle with cancer. Bill was a 17-year resident of Truckee. He is survived by his wife, Iris, and seven children and 18 grandchildren. Bill also is survived by his sister, Terri, and her family.

Bill was born on Dec. 15, 1929 in Trona, Calif. to Ross and Helen Durland. He graduated from the University of California-Berkeley in 1951 and was a proud member of CAL Crew. He spent his entire career with Shell Oil in various managerial positions.

Bill and Iris retired to Truckee in 1989 where they enjoyed their involvement with ArtTruckee, attending jazz festivals and traveling. Bill was an avid lover of jazz, skiing, hiking, bicycling and most of all his home in Truckee. He never stopped seeking knowledge of science, history and world events.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Nov. 18 at 2 p.m. at Sierra Bible Church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to T. Gary Rogers Rowing Center (Cal Crew), Truckee Donner Land Trust or Tahoe Forest Hospice.
