Eagle monument dedicated

John A. Bayless

The Town of Truckee and Caltrans will host a rededication of the historic Victory Highway Monument downtown 2 p.m. Friday, July 24, on the 70th anniversary of its original installation and dedication.

The monument, which was originally located near the state line on Highway 40, features a solid bronze eagle with wings outstretched, hovering over a nest with two eaglets.

It has been relocated to the downtown depot property, where a new base was constructed using brick from the Masonic Building destroyed by a gas explosion in 1993.

Rock from the original monument base was used to build the planter around the new base.

The eagle was removed from the state line in the 1970s because of vandalism. Since its removal, it has been stored for a few years, displayed at Cal Expo and at the Citizen Soldiers Museum in Sacramento. Most recently, it was stored in the Caltrans District 3 History Center in Marysville.

Speakers at the ceremony will include Mayor Ron Florian, Town Council Member Bob Drake, Assemblyman Bernie Richter, Dave Butler of Sen. Tim Leslie’s office, Caltrans District 3 Director Irene Itamura and highway historian Lyn Protteau.
