Early morning Brockway Summit wreck closes road for 2 hours

Staff report

KINGS BEACH, Calif. and#8212; A 52-year-old woman suffered serious injuries Tuesday morning after her truck hit a patch of ice and slid off Highway 267 near Brockway Summit, an official said.

According to a report from California Highway Patrol Trooper Tony Prisco, the woman was traveling southbound at 55 miles per hour in a silver Toyota 4 Runner when she hit the ice and lost control of the vehicle. The car slid off the highway and down the hillside, striking a power pole.

The impact sheared the pole in half, according to the report, and its lines fell across the south and northbound lanes of Highway 267, closing off the main path between Kings Beach and Truckee for about 2 hours.

The vehicle came to rest on all four wheels at the bottom of the hillside, according to CHP. The driver was extricated by the North Tahoe Fire Protection District, and she was flown via Care Flight helicopter to Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno for treatment.

The incident occurred after a cold front blew into the Truckee/Tahoe region Monday, bringing snow flurries and dropping temperatures into the 20s overnight, hence the icy conditions during Tuesday morning’s commute. According to various weather reports, low temperatures Tuesday night also are forecast in the mid-20s.
