EAT This Week: Truckee Brewing Company’s Philly Cheesesteak Wrap
To try and decide each week where and what to eat around the basin can be a challenge – there are so many amazing choices. In this feature we’ll dive into dishes that will surely satisfy those hunger pangs and leave you wondering where to go next.
The Philly Cheesesteak is probably one of the most controversial sandwiches out there – mainly stemming from the rivalry between two Philadelphia establishments (Pat’s and Geno’s). But, there are definitely opinionated folks out there who preach at the church of the cheesesteak – and for you purists, this week’s feature might have you jumping out of your shoes. But fear not, this is meant to be a take on the classic offering, and a pretty good one at that.
As you could guess, this isn’t even a sandwich. A spinach tortilla fills in for the traditional hoagie roll and I have to say, I didn’t miss it one bit. It helped keep everything contained quite nicely and I had no issues with shrapnel flying all over my plate. Inside the roll-up is loaded with a flavor bomb that consists of shaved beef ribeye, sauteed bell peppers and onions, mushrooms, Monterey jack cheese, and a queso sauce.
The beef is like butter – it’s super tender and carries the heft that you expect this party pairing to carry. The onions and peppers are dialed in to give you that ever so slight crunch but remain tender like a baby’s touch and the mushrooms lend a nice balance of earthiness to round out the flavors.
For all of these familiar (and delicious) components, it’s the cheese sauce that really pushed it over the line for me. I’m not going to go as far as to say I’d have no issues bathing in it (which is probably a little too far), but I can see filling up a bathtub for a dipping party. It’s creamy and zingy and brings a punctuation to each bite.
This offering teeters perfectly between sweet and savory, and for any of you who don’t do the cheesesteak wit onions, what are you doing? Maybe you need this dish to change your mind.
