Editor column: Introducing you to your new look to Friday’s Local Life

TAHOE/TRUCKEE – It’s our hope at the Sierra Sun that you read the story on Page 2 of today’s print edition, a “Meet Your Merchant” feature that dives into a new business – Truckee River Taxi Company – dedicated to offering a safe ride after locals and tourists spend a day floating and having a good time on the Truckee River.Beginning this week, “Meet Your Merchant” will be a regular feature on Page 2 within every Friday edition. It’s part of a more community-focused direction for the Sierra Sun – last week, we launched a similar weekly feature with the Sun’s sister paper, the North Lake Tahoe Bonanza – with the goal of celebrating more of our great people and businesses by telling compelling human interest stories.Back in the summer of 2009, when we redesigned the print edition of the Sierra Sun to make its presentation a bit more modern, along with this came our Local Life page – Page 2. The concept was to feature local community stories and a community-submitted photo to banner the top of the page.Over the past couple years, as we’ve worked through the constant struggle to include more news than a twice-weekly newspaper can hold, this page has featured everything from photo spreads, community stories and hard news. However, starting this week, we’ll make sure our Local Life page each Friday provides a home for those great human interest stories we know are out there. Each week, “Meet Your Merchant” will dive into a local business (anywhere from the West Shore to Kings Beach, stretching to Truckee and including Squaw and Northstar in between) or merchant, and do more than just provide the particulars of what the business does, who the owners are and how to contact them. Rather, “Meet Your Merchant” aims to go above and beyond that basic format by providing anecdotal stories of how a particular merchant is giving back to the community. We’ll talk about the history of the business, share success stories – and talk about the low times – and provide that much-needed face behind our businesses and merchants so our readers understand they are more than just a phone book listing. All kinds of businesses will be featured every other week – new businesses, old businesses, those with a large stable of employees and those who somehow get the job done with just one or two people running the show. We’d love your suggestions, too. If you have an idea for a neighbor or merchant you feel has a great story to tell, email me and explain why. It may take a while to get to your suggestions, but believe me when I say they’ll be added to the list.So with that, we hope you enjoy your new Friday Page 2, as much as we enjoy bringing it to you.Kevin MacMillan is managing editor-of the Sierra Sun and North Lake-Tahoe Bonanza.
