Well, not really. But if you ever were or still are a certified Deadhead, mark your calendar for Saturday, Dec. 20, at 11 a.m., when local author Doug Bratt will sign his new book, “Ava’s Grateful Bears,” at The Bookshelf.

Bratt’s book is a true story about a grandfather, a granddaughter and a box of 108 Grateful Dead bears. If you’re a true Deadhead, maybe you have a couple of these magical little bears from a special time at a Dead concert.

“Ava’s Grateful Bears” opens with, “Looking for a way to connect with his granddaughter, Ava’s grandfather secretly places a large box under the Christmas tree. Within that box is a collection of over 100 Grateful Dead Bears. Over the next seven years, a connection grows between granddaughter, grandfather and that magical collection of bears — a connection that takes all of them on a special journey together. A grateful journey.”

But you don’t need to be a Deadhead to feel the message behind this true story of a grandfather’s love for his granddaughter and the connection that grows over the years with the help of some grateful bears.

Have the author sign a copy for you Saturday at the Truckee book store at 11429 Donner Pass Road for a Christmas gift, or pick one up just to read to a special child.
