Common Core pros, cons topic of Carson City meeting Tuesday

Staff report

CARSON CITY, Nev. — A public meeting on the pros and cons of Common Core standards will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 13, at the Carson City Legislative Building, room 1214.

The event is being hosted by Assemblyman P.K. O’Neill.

Organizers of the event say Nevada adopted Common Core before the program was completed without any kind of public review.

Some states never adopted Common Core, and some that have adopted the standards have since rescinded them.

The pros and cons of Common Core will be presented at the meeting by Professor James Milgram and Professor Sandra Stotsky (cons) and Nevada Department of Education representatives Steve Canavero and Judy Osgood (pros).

A Q-and-A session will follow the panel discussion. Issues to be discussed include loss of local control, parent and teacher roles, data collection, testing and costs.

Admission is free, but donations are welcome. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. For more information, call Ann, 775-882-3854.

The legislative building is located at 401 S. Carson St.
