Counterterrorism expert to speak about ISIS at SNC Tahoe

Staff report

Ted Morse

INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. — Sierra Nevada College International Studies Professor Ted Morse will speak next week about the origins, power and objectives of ISIS/ISIL, the violent terrorist group that has captured world attention.

The free talk, entitled "ISIS/ISIL: Behind the Headlines," will take place at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 31, in the Tahoe Center for Environmental Sciences Building, Room 139/141, at the SNC Tahoe campus in Incline Village.

Morse, a highly decorated retired U.S. Senior Foreign Service Officer, is a frequent public speaker on militant Islam, according to a press release about the event.

During his talk, Morse will cover the rise of ISIS/ISIL: who leads it; how it is attracting fanatics from around the world; the sources of its funding and expansion; as well as current efforts to counter its power and reach.

"ISIL is in pursuit of reestablishing the Islamic caliphate that existed during the period 600-1,500 CE, and the organization's violent and rapid expansion has shocked the world," said Morse, who has helped disarm and demobilize insurgent and terrorist groups on four continents, according to the college.

Over the course of his 50-year career, Morse has worked in long-term economic, political, security and social development in Africa, Asia, Central America, the Caribbean, the Balkans, and Iraq, and has been an international consultant for the U.S. and British governments, the United Nations, and the World Bank among others.
