Give Back Tahoe: Family Resource Center of Truckee building community
Each week in 2016, the Sierra Sun — in partnership with the Tahoe Truckee Community Foundation — will publish short articles about Tahoe-Truckee nonprofits as part of our Give Back Tahoe campaign. The articles are submitted to the Sun by the nonprofits themselves in an effort to draw more awareness to them and their cause, and to provide insight into the work each does to benefit the community. Visit givebacktahoe.org to learn more about the Give Back Tahoe campaign.
TAHOE-TRUCKEE, Calif. — The Family Resource Center of Truckee (FRCoT) promotes social and economic success in your community by providing education, mobilizing resources and advocating for change. Since its inception in 2001, the FRCoT has been a primary point-of-contact for Truckee families seeking to improve their lives.
Annually, we serve more than 1,000 local families through the following programs:
Tahoe-Truckee Mediation & Legal Assistance Program: We are the only regional provider of free and low-cost legal and mediation services to help families avoid eviction, secure custody agreements, claim lost wages, and connect with immigration resources. Unresolved legal issues are a major source of stress and upheaval for families — we provide information, guidance and mediation services that promote peaceful resolution of disputes.
Early Childhood Education & Parenting Supports: We provide education and encouragement as families grow. Offerings for parents of infants and toddlers include Baby and Me, Infant Massage, Musikgarten, Toddler GymTime and the Family Room at Truckee Elementary. Loving Solutions and Parent Project are research-based series aimed at supporting parents of older children. These classes promote brain development, language acquisition, healthy parent-child interaction, and opportunities for families to create enduring friendships.
Family Advocacy: We help families to navigate challenging situations and to build skills for success. Programs include: healthcare enrollment, homelessness prevention, child abuse prevention, affordable housing advocacy and our Promotora Program. Promotoras promote physical and mental health within our local Latino community by delivering culturally and linguistically appropriate education, screening and referral services to support healthy lifestyle choices and access to services.
FRCoT programs operate thanks to grants, donations and partnerships. Please visit http://www.truckeefrc.org for more information or to make a donation.
