Give Back Tahoe: Slow Food Lake Tahoe gives back to the region
Have you shopped at the Truckee Community Farmers Market; filled yourself with delicious soup at a Community Soup Night; attended a Backyard Chicken Raising Workshop; or volunteered at a Dig-In at the Truckee Demonstration Garden?
If you have done any of the above “Thank You!” for being a part of the Slow Food Lake Tahoe movement. Slow Food Lake Tahoe is a volunteer run organization with a mission to connect our community to the enjoyment of good, clean and fair food by inspiring a self-reliant food culture. We educate the community about food through 3 main initiatives.
Our first initiative is the Truckee Community Farmers Market, which just completed its second, hugely successful year last month. Secondly, SFLT offers Skillshares, demonstration and hands on food workshops, which teach community members skills to become self-reliant. Lastly, SFLT manages the Truckee Demonstration Garden located at the Truckee Regional Park, where high-altitude sustainable gardening techniques to sow and grow food are taught.
This Summer at the Garden, no cost Grow Your Own Workshops were offered and the Garden’s weekly bounty was donated to the Sierra Senior Services, Meals on Wheels program.
Slow Food Lake Tahoe’s next big endeavor is revitalizing the Kids Corner @ the Truckee Demonstration Garden. The revitalized Kids Corner will improve our environment and provide a launching pad to help educate our youth about growing their own healthy, clean food while linking it to a commitment to the environment and community.
SFLT plans to teach community youth about: 1. Where food comes from; 2. What real food tastes like; 3. How to grow and harvest fresh produce in an environmentally friendly way; and 4. How food connects to culture and community. For additional information about Slow Food Lake Tahoe, upcoming events and membership, visit http://www.slowfoodlaketahoe.org.
