Give Back Tahoe: Truckee River Watershed Council works for the watershed

TRUCKEE, Calif. — At the Truckee River Watershed Council, we work for the watershed. It’s our nature.

The Truckee River region is threatened. Fish: declining. Invertebrates: dwindling. Meadows: drying up. Human impact from mining, grazing, logging, population growth — and now climate change — contributes to the River’s “polluted” EPA rating. The watershed needs our help. We exist to transform its health and resiliency – so nature and humanity can thrive together.

We spearhead large-scale restoration projects to reverse historic land-use impact. Take a look at Perazzo Meadows. In the late 1800s the creek was straightened to improve cattle grazing. A hundred years later, the meadow was dry. The Watershed Council engaged partners to restore the creek to its historic meanders.

Afterward, hundreds of volunteers helped with revegetation on Truckee River Day. Today, native grasses grow three feet high, bugs are fat, and the birds and fish that feed on them are rebounding. The meadow is beautiful and functioning.

With successes like this and you at our side, we are on track to complete another four restoration projects in 2016. But more work is needed. Our goal is to complete 50 high priority projects over the next 10 years.
