Was Al Capp ahead of his time with the Li’l Abner comic, in inventing Sadie Hawkins Day?

The girls called the shots when they foot-raced to claim the bachelors, and though not many of us partake in this activity now, we do have access to 21st century versions of the notion at our libraries. Check out such titles as:

The Only Woman in the Room: Why Science is Still a Boys Club, Eileen Pollack, about women scientists’ experiences today;

Unfinished Business: Equality for Women and Men, Work and Family, Anne-Marie Slaughter, a new look at the women’s movement where both men and women can advance;

Shrill: Notes from a Loud Woman, Lindy West, a humorous examination of life as a woman;

Fight Like a Girl: 50 Feminists Who Changed the World, Laura Barcella, a young adult look into women who have paved the way to equality.

Incline Village Library

Wednesday, Nov. 9, 6:30 p.m. Tahoe Talks: Living with Wildlife. Join our guest experts and the community as we discuss Living with Wildlife. A vital conversation for our local community.

Thursday, Nov. 10, 4 p.m. Paws 2 Read: Reading program for children of all ages proudly presented by Paws 4 Love. Friendly dogs lend a loving, non-judgmental ear to beginning readers. After reading to a gentle dog, children receive a free book.

In honor of our Veterans, the library will be closed on Nov. 11. A big thank you, and lots of love to all the Veterans out there! Thank you for your service!

Kings Beach Library

We are changing our hours on Nov. 15. Friday and Saturday will change to 1-5 p.m. The rest will remain the same.

Thursday, Nov. 10, 3-4 p.m. “Computers with Carl.” Bring your question to the computer guru from Tahoe Tech Group. Free!

Tuesday, Nov. 15, 10:30-11 a.m. Preschool Story Time. Come celebrate a family theme with books, rhymes, songs and a craft.

We will be closed on Friday, Nov. 11, in observance of Veteran’s Day.

Truckee Library

Truckee Library Storytimes: Tuesdays at 10:30 a.m. Toddler Time, for ages 18 months to 3 years. Wednesdays at 10:30 a.m. Babes in Bookland, for ages 6 months to 2 years. Thursdays at 11:30 a.m. Preschool Stories, for ages 3 and up. Join Stay & Play for a half-hour after each Storytime.

We will be closed on Friday, Nov. 11, in observance of Veteran’s Day.

The Read Up! adult literacy program based at the Truckee Library is constantly in need of community volunteers interested in becoming literacy/ESL tutors. Please call Rolann at 530-575-7030 for more details.
