TAHOE CITY, Calif. — The Sept. 12 Tahoe Sierra Century is a fundraiser for the North Tahoe Middle and High school bands, run by the local FAN club.

This year, a community volunteer and music advocate launched an Indiegogo campaign to raise another few thousand dollars specifically for the North Tahoe High School Jazz Band.

If the campaign is funded, Ken Gracey will attempt to ride his unicycle on the regular 30-mile loop plus the Donner Summit climb and descent on a six-foot “giraffe” unicycle.

While unicyclists commonly ride 30-milers, it’s very unusual and demanding to attempt Donner Summit on a small wheeled, tall giraffe unicycle.

These additional five miles would bring the ride to 35 miles total.

Gracey believes the NTHS Jazz Band and teacher Dean Nordby make a very unique contribution in the community and should be recognized with a successful Indiegogo fundraiser.

“They play at community events, retirement homes, and elementary schools,” Gracey said. “Mr. Nordby is a very respected educator and he teaches the students to give back with their music, so I’d like to do my part to make their year a little easier by providing more funds for them.”

All money from the Indiegogo campaign will go to the NTHS Jazz Band and will be used for instruments, travel and for those needing financial support to participate in band activities.
