Election 2010: Friday deadline passes, many local races extended to Wednesday
TRUCKEE/TAHOE, Calif. andamp;#8212; With the official Friday deadline passed for candidate filing for the November election, a number of area races will actually extend that deadline until Wednesday.But interest seems to finally have been perked, with many candidates filing late in the week, and appointments set on extended filing period races for at least three more candidates next week with Truckee Town Clerk Judy Price.The biggest race still unfilled is the Tahoe Truckee Unified School District.
The race for the Truckee-Donner Recreation andamp; Park District has gotten going with seven candidates for four seats, but will remain open until Wednesday because incumbent John Pruyn hasn’t filed.Kevin Murphy and Peter Werbel are the incumbents for the three four-year seats, challenged by Richard Valentine, Ann Folsom and Brent Ferrera. John Monson, filed for the two-year seat, is unchallenged.The Truckee Fire Protection District Board also has more candidates than seats, but will stay open for filing because incumbent Gary Waters didn’t submit. Incumbents Ben Malone and Joe Straub are challenged by Victor Hernandez, Paul Wilford, James Herzman and Gerald Herrick.The Tahoe Forest Health District Board will stay open for filing with incumbents Roger Kahn, Ken Cutler and Lawrence Long, joined by John Mohun.The Truckee Tahoe Airport District finally not only got candidates, but a race for its two seats, with all newcomers Ernist Alioto, Desmond Elder, Sarah Allen and Robert Cohune in the hunt.The Tahoe Truckee Unified School District is also among the list of extended races with as of yet only one candidate being issued candidate filing papers and no actual filings recorded.Placer County has yet to confirm its list of candidates as of this writing, but will do so soon. The race for the Truckee Town Council is closed with all three incumbents andamp;#8212; Mark Brown, Richard Anderson and Carolyn Wallace Dee andamp;#8212; filed, and joined by challenger Carl Jeffries.With the two incumbents filed at the Truckee Donner Public Utility District andamp;#8212; Ron Hemig and Tony Laliotis andamp;#8212; and one challenger joining them; Josh Susman, the race is closed as of Friday afternoon.Likewise with all three incumbents, and only the incumbents, filed at the Truckee Sanitary District, that race is closed with Ronald Sweet, Jerry Gilmore and Mike Sullivan.
