Election 2010: In hardest-fought Nevada County campaigns, debt lingers

NEVADA COUNTY and#8212;-Campaign finance disclosure statements show a few last-ditch fundraising efforts before the June 8 election, and some lingering debt in the fiercest campaigns.
The primary election drew major dollars for campaigns that are seldom controversial and#8212; such as assessor and clerk-recorder. The assessor’s race was the most costly, with Sue Horne and Rolf Kleinhans together spending nearly $75,000.
Candidates were required to keep financial information for the period from May 23 to June 30 and submit it to the Nevada County Elections Office by Aug. 2.
One candidate on the county ballot and#8212; District III Supervisor-elect Terry Lamphier and#8212; has not completed the latest round of financial disclosure statements.

Nevada County Assessor
and#8226; Sue Horne raised $37,488 in her winning campaign for assessor, and spent $45,378 by June 30. She made more than $6,000 in payments to a Newcastle-based consulting firm as her campaign drew to a close.
In the latest reporting period, Horne received $150 from ACM Properties in Grass Valley.
and#8226; Rolf Kleinhans raised $29,283 in contributions during his unsuccessful bid for assessor, and he spent the same amount.
In the last two weeks of the campaign, he raised almost $5,000, including $500 from the Contractors Association of Truckee-Tahoe, $400 from Dan Rossovich, $300 from Robin Cayton, and smaller contributions from Nevada County District 2 Supervisor Ed Scofield, Grass Valley City Councilman Dan Miller and Mill Street Clothing, owned by Grass Valley Mayor Lisa Swarthout.
and#8226; Incumbent Gregory Diaz raised $38,197 to keep the seat to which he was appointed, and spent slightly less and#8212; $37,989. His campaign spent money on advertising and repaying loans during the most recent disclosure period.
In the last days of the campaign, Diaz and his wife, Katherine Diaz, contributed $443 to his campaign; smaller donations came from Nick and Amanda Wilcox of Penn Valley (Nick Wilcox is on the Nevada Irrigation District board) and Marjorie and Michael Craig of Pine Grove.
His committee also made a loan payment of $5,637 to John Foster of Nevada City; his wife, Patricia Foster, was treasurer of Diaz’ campaign. (They are not related to Grass Valley Police Chief John Foster).
and#8226; Barry Pruett raised a total of $12,487 in an unsuccessful attempt to unseat Gregory Diaz. He spent $16,012 on the bid.
Pruett received a number of eleventh-hour contributions from Nevada County residents including County Supervisor Ed Scofield, Nevada Joint Union High School District Trustee Georgie Coulter and political blogger George Rebane.
and#8226; Terry Lamphier did not file financial disclosure statements by the Aug. 2 deadline in his successful campaign to unseat incumbent John Spencer, representing the Grass Valley area.
County elections officials have sent him a reminder notice about missing the deadline. Lamphier could not be reached for comment Friday.
As of May 22, he had received $7,503 in contributions and spent $4,935.
and#8226; John Spencer raised $8,962 in an unsuccessful bid to keep his seat on the board of supervisors; he spent $7,680. Contributions just before the election include $950 from the Nevada County Contractors Association.
and#8226; Incumbent Tina Vernon raised $4,302 in her campaign, and spent $2,228. She will compete in a run-off election in Nov. 2010 with Dai Meagher.
and#8226; Dai Meagher raised $9,225 in his campaign, and spent $14,631. He will compete in a run-off election in Nov. 2010 with Tina Vernon.
and#8226; Richard Nolle raised $8,170 in his unsuccessful campaign for treasurer-tax collector, and spent $10,969.
and#8226; Darlene Woo reported no contributions and no expenditures in her unsuccessful bid for treasurer/tax collector.
