TAHOE CITY, Calif. andamp;#8212; In Placer County, overnight visitors staying in area accommodations are charged a county-wide 8 percent transient occupancy tax.Accommodations along Lake Tahoe from Kings Beach to Homewood and in the Northstar, Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows communities, however, add an additional 2 percent transient occupancy tax.On June 5, area residents will be asked to renew that 2 percent portion.Since the 2 percent TOT was first authorized by voters in 1995, $20 million have been allocated to capital projects, and $164 million has been leveraged in federal, state and local funds, according to officials. The money has been used to fund transportation, infrastructure, tourism marketing and visitor information projects along the North Shore of Lake Tahoe.andamp;#8220;In a voter survey last summer, potential voters were 85 percent likely to vote for the renewal, and 60 percent said they would definitely vote for it,andamp;#8221; said Ron Treabess, of the North Lake Tahoe Resort Association, in a recent Truckee North Tahoe Transportation Management Agency meeting. andamp;#8220;We just need to keep people reminded that they liked it last summer.andamp;#8221;The tax is paid by overnight visitors, collected and remitted to Placer County by accommodation proprietors and then administered through NLTRA.The resort association uses a system of committees to identify projects to be funded, and additional oversight is provide by the Placer County Board of Supervisors, whose approval is needed for infrastructure expenditures. For example, supervisors recently approved the resort associationandamp;#8217;s proposal to use about $2.5 million of TOT funds to help acquire the Tahoe City Golf Course.Additionally, TOT has provided partial funding for projects such as the transit center at 64 Acres Park, Olympic Trail Restoration and a trolley purchase.andamp;#8220;I strongly believe that the TOT collection has been very good for eastern Placer County,andamp;#8221; said Placer County Supervisor Jennifer Montgomery, andamp;#8220;and I will personally be supporting and voting for its renewal.andamp;#8221;The tax will be extended for an additional 10 years if the measure is successful at the polls.
