Election ballots still being tallied

Sun staff reports

The Nevada County Elections Office reported there are more than 9,000 ballots that remain to be counted in the weeks following the Nov. 7 election.

In an effort to provide a snapshot of the remaining uncounted ballots that may decide a close race, the Elections Office has extrapolated the following information from the remaining ballots by precinct order:

– 918: Town of Truckee

– 1,024: Truckee-Tahoe Airport District

– 1,027: Tahoe Forest Hospital District

– 943: Truckee-Donner Public Utility District

More than 42,000 ballots were cast in Nevada County this election.

In Placer County, more than one-third of its ballots have yet to be counted ” 33,000 out of 93,956 cast, according to its elections office. The high number is due to factors such as population growth and the voting eligibility issues that can cause, in addition to a large absentee voting population, Assistant Registrar Ryan Ronco said.

Placer County does not update results during its canvass but aims for a certified tally by Thanksgiving, he said. Final vote results are legally required to be sent to the Secretary of State’s office by Dec. 5.

Around 530,000 ballots statewide have yet to be counted. More than 7.3 million were cast in California for this election, according to the Secretary of State’s office.
