Election results are close, but not done

TRUCKEE “-Complete election results are inching closer in Nevada and Placer counties.

A high-turnout election combined with large vote-by-mail turnout left tens of thousands of ballots uncounted on election night Nov. 4, and officials have been working through the absentee and provisional ballots ever since.

The counting was further slowed by the close race for the fourth congressional district between Tom McClintock and Charlie Brown, which has added a number of personnel to oversee the work and required a larger hand count for that race.

“We probably have 50 people in here on a daily basis,” said Placer County Clerk Recorder Jim McCauley.

But both counties are zeroing in.

On Thursday McCauley said he expects results today, Saturday, or Monday.

Nevada County had about 1,000 provisional ballots left as of Thursday, said Gail Smith, acting assistant clerk recorder.

She said she expects an update sometime next week.
