LAKE TAHOE, Calif. — U.S. Forest Service officials announced last week that they will begin opening some of their South Shore and West Shore recreational facilities for summer operations starting Saturday, April 30.

California State Parks staff plans to open West Shore facilities starting in mid-May. Most day-use areas and campgrounds are expected to be fully open in time for Memorial Day Weekend, May 27-30.

“This year it’s pretty much on schedule,” Tahoe Basin Forest Service spokeswoman Lisa Herron said. “The last two years we opened early. It’s weather and staff dependent.”

All area Forest Service and CA State Parks lands are accessible through winter and spring; however, parking and onsite facilities typically are limited due to winter maintenance and water management.

“The grounds are always open,” Herron said, “but parking is the issue. That’s a topic we’re looking at with our winter management program.”

PARKING AWARENESS

The Tahoe Basin Forest Service office is currently considering revision of winter practices and may opt to maintain certain sites through winter if the demand is there along with resources to maintain them.

There will be no trash removal, open restroom facilities or parking at closed sites until they are officially opened for the season.

Prior to parking areas opening, Forest Service officials ask visitors to pack out trash and park along Highway 89 in appropriate spaces. Motorists are also reminded not to park in front of closed gates or on vegetation and other sensitive areas.

Kiva Picnic Area; Baldwin and Nevada beaches; Eagle Falls; Chimney Beach; and Secret Harbor parking areas will all open April 30. William Kent, Kaspian, Meeks Bay, Bayview, Fallen Leaf and Nevada Beach campgrounds will open Friday, May 13.

CALIFORNIA STATE PARKS TO FOLLOW

For the first time in four years, Emerald Bay’s Eagle Point Campground is expected to open to the public for the summer season in late June. The site was undergoing significant construction on its existing water systems and remained closed the previous summers.

“Everything is pretty much on track,” said Kathy Searl, supervising ranger for California State Parks along the West Shore, describing West Shore sites. “The only thing that has been delayed is Eagle Point.”

D.L. Bliss, Sugar Pine Point and Emerald Bay state parks are all expected to be fully open prior to Memorial Day Weekend.
