Lake Tahoe’s faults, earthquakes focus of presentation next week

Staff report

INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. — Next week, the UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center will host Courtney Brailo from the University of Nevada, Reno, Seismological Lab in Incline Village.

Brailo is scheduled to discuss faulting and the geologic history of the greater Truckee-Tahoe-Reno region, and how the use of newly acquired LiDAR imagery can help scientists perform better research.

“In the last few years, Light Detecting and Ranging (LiDAR) imagery has become a very useful and powerful tool for accurately imaging the earth’s surface using low-powered lasers,” according to a UC Davis news release. “In particular, airborne laser sweeps have allowed us to produce previously unattainable bare-earth maps in vegetated and alpine terrain.

New and improved fault maps are now being developed in Washoe County (including Reno, Sparks and Incline Village) using this newly acquired LiDAR imagery.”

A $5 donation is suggested for this event. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 17, at the TERC Building at 291 Country Club Drive, on the campus of Sierra Nevada College.

The program will begin at 6 p.m., with refreshments and no-host bar from 5:30-6 p.m. For more information or directions call 775-881-7566, or visit tahoe.ucdavis.edu/events.
