TRUCKEE, Calif. — The public transportation link between Lake Tahoe and Truckee is becoming more convenient for residents and visitors.

Starting July 1, Tahoe Area Regional Transit's Highway 267 summer service will expand to include two buses running hourly from Crystal Bay to downtown Truckee from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily.

Prior summer operations along 267 included one bus, providing hourly service between Northstar California and Crystal Bay, through Kings Beach.

"We're very excited to be at this point — to be able to provide full service outside just the wintertime," said Will Garner, transit manager for Placer County.

This new service, identical to TART's Highway 267 winter service, will continue through Sept. 7.

Like previous years, the 267 service will cease this fall, resuming in mid-December with the winter schedule.

Starting in 2016, however, it will not suspend during the shoulder seasons, thus becoming a year-round service. The service is estimated to cost an additional $620,000 annually.

The Truckee Town Council and Truckee Tahoe Airport District board of directors have each approved a three-year commitment of $62,500 annually to help fund the effort.

The remaining $495,000 is coming from Placer County's transportation fund, Federal Transit Administration funds and passenger fares.

Passenger fares will not increase as a result of the expanded 267 service, Garner said.

TART's budget, which included the expense of the expanded service, was part of Placer County's preliminary budget, which the Board of Supervisors approved last month.

Funding for the year-round service is secured through summer 2018, at which point funders will evaluate performance to decide whether to reinvest, Garner said.
