Expect more clouds, cooler temperatures

Paul Dunn/Sun News ServiceCold, crisp evening temperatures have turned grass and shrubs in the Upper Truckee Marsh a warm reddish-brown. Wednesday's gorgeous blue skies may succumb to clouds by the weekend, though.

All good things must come to an end, including the beautiful fall weather we’ve had most of this week.

A weak low-pressure system spinning off the central California coast will bring increasing high clouds over the Tahoe area this afternoon. These clouds should have little effect on today’s temperatures as highs climb back into the lower to mid-60s around the basin. Lows tonight will be a little milder, with a blanket of cloud cover holding minimum readings in the mid- to upper 20s around the lake, or slightly above the seasonal normal for this date. The cooling trend in daytime temperatures will continue into Friday, as highs top out in the upper 50s under partly cloudy skies.

The latest computer forecast models are now showing the next weather system moving into the Sierra on Saturday night, or about 24 hours slower than previous models were showing. This is good news for motorists planning travel over the Sierra this weekend, with better weather projected for Friday night, and for returning travelers Sunday afternoon and evening.

Stay tuned for further updates on snow amounts and snow levels, with the best chance of accumulating snow Sunday morning.
