Explosion, fire destroy Truckee home

A Truckee home was destroyed by fire early Tuesday after witnesses heard an explosion and saw the building erupt into flames.

No one was inside the home at the time, according to neighbors.

“To me it just sounded like a big explosion,” said Sierra Meadows homeowner Susan Kokenge of the sound that awoke her at 2:15 a.m. “Later I heard something like the framing falling or the roof.”

Kokenge alerted the Truckee Fire Protection District about the explosion and fire at the Thelin Drive property. But firefighters were unable to prevent the home’s complete destruction.

“It didn’t take long,” said Kokenge. “It was fully engulfed … in a matter of five minutes.”

Bruce Hartzell, another neighbor, said some residents prepared to evacuate in case the flames jumped from the homes to the neighboring forest.

“We were rounding up our animals with the thought that if it leaped to the next house, we were out of there,” said Hartzell, a Truckee veterinarian who owns horses, cats, dogs and birds.

“There were embers that were sparking … but it was a windless night,” said Hartzell.

The Truckee Fire Protection District was not available to comment on the cause of the fire by deadline Tuesday.
