TAHOE CITY, Calif. — This is not your traditional bell choir. Performances are dramatic, moving and thoughtful.

Tintabulations, a community handbell ensemble from Reno, Nev., will present their annual Christmas concert, this year entitled “A Hipster’s Carol.”

This concert will be joyfully performed at the Center for Spiritual Living Tahoe-Truckee, 700 North Lake Blvd., above the Tahoe City Marina in Tahoe City, Dec. 22 at 3 p.m. Suggested donation is $10.

Clad in their trademark green Converse shoes, this hour-long concert will feature unique arrangements of everyone’s favorite carols performed on 120 bells and chimes.

The entire concert is narrated with an original poem about one man’s quest to find his own meaning of the holiday season. From upbeat songs like “Ding Dong, Merrily on High” to dramatic versions of “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel” and “The First Noel,” this concert puts even the toughest Grinch in the holiday spirit.

Since its founding in 1996, Tintabulations Handbell Ensemble (or just “Tintab,” as the members say) has been pushing the boundaries of traditional handbell performance and entertaining audiences around the west coast.

Barb Walsh, the group’s director and a local music teacher, started Tintab with a handful of ambitious high school students. The group has since grown to include University of Nevada students, music teachers, and working professionals from all walks of life. Tintab performs with the Reno Pops and Reno Philharmonic, as well as giving concerts throughout Nevada, California, Oregon, Hawaii, and even Disneyland.
