Fallen Nevada County Marine earns Silver Star

GRASS VALLEY ” Fallen Nevada County Marine Sean Stokes was awarded the Silver Star for bravery Wednesday at a Camp Pendleton ceremony in Southern California.

The 2001 Bear River High School graduate was on his third tour to Iraq when he was killed last July.

Father Gary Stokes was at the ceremony to accept the medal. He said his research showed son Sean was only the third Marine private ever to win the Silver Star, and the first since the Vietnam War.

Sean Stokes gained national recognition in 2004, during his first tour of Iraq for taking the point and saving lives at the Battle of Fallujah.

He served again in 2005 and was killed by an explosion in Al Anbar province July 30, 2007, while walking point.
