Fatal accident on Interstate 80 Wednesday

Law enforcement closed Interstate 80 Wednesday afternoon shortly after a fatal accident near the Donner Pass Road exit east of Downtown Truckee.

According to the California Highway Patrol, a driver from Modesto in a 1991 Chevrolet Camaro was part-way up the exit when he drifted left, down the dirt hillside, across eastbound traffic, and struck the center divide after 4 p.m.

Highway patrol officers found the airbags had deployed and the driver was wearing a seatbelt.

The driver was taken to Tahoe Forest Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 5:25 p.m., according the highway patrol.

“There may have been a prior medical issue to the crash, but we won’t know until we get the coroner report,” said California Highway Patrol Officer Steve Skeen.
