Staff reports

An elderly couple was killed Friday afternoon on Interstate 80 east of Truckee when their car tangled with a semitrailer.

The crash happened at approximately 2:40 p.m. about one mile west of Floriston and blocked the eastbound fast lane of I-80, according to CHP reports. The victims, in a Mercury Sable, were unidentified as of Friday afternoon. The driver of the tractor-trailer was uninjured.

The CHP received a 911 cell phone call reporting a tractor-trailer had crushed a car in an adjacent lane. Officers on the scene of the accident said the tractor-trailer was traveling eastbound in the right lane and the Sable was in the left when the vehicles made contact.

The CHP said the car lost control and hit the left side of the truck. Both vehicles then went out of control and the truck’s trailer axles ran over the car. Both vehicles came to a halt after hitting the center divider.

As of Friday, the CHP could not say what caused the accident.

Meanwhile, eastbound I-80 traffic was backed up to the I-80-Highway 267 interchange at Truckee from the time of the accident until 6:45 p.m. Friday when this report was posted.
