Fire nearly contained in Susanville

RENO, Nev. (AP) – Crews made major progress Monday on the huge Stream fire in the Sierra, building a containment line around 80 percent of the burn area.

The size of the fire southeast of Susanville, Calif., now is Fire near Susanville burns 3,500 acresestimated at 3,560 acres. Fire bosses were looking for full containment sometime Wednesday.

Also on Wednesday, people who were forced to evacuate campgrounds around Antelope Lake in a hurry last week were to be allowed to return to retrieve gear that survived the fire.

They are required to pre-register with fire officials and must meet at the Taylorsville Campground or the Janesville Firehall to be escorted to the appropriate site.

No structures were burned in the fire that began Thursday from a lightning strike but the flames destroyed a small visitor kiosk and some bathrooms at Antelope Lake Dam.

Firefighting costs have topped the $1.8 million mark.

In Nevada, another major fire continued to grow in both size and containment.

The Tabor Creek fire 20 miles north of Wells in the northeastern part of the state had grown to 7,000. It was 75 percent contained on Monday at a cost so far of $600,000.

A third lightning-sparked blaze was burning 40 miles southwest of Ely. The Smith Creek fire has blackened 2,100 acres and was 30 percent contained.
