Fire Safe Council Senior Assistance Program

Sun staff reports

With the help of a grant, the Fire Safe Council of Nevada County will employ crews to create defensible space at the residences of 20 low-income seniors and the disabled.

The Fire Safe Council received aid for its Special Needs Assistance Programfrom the American Conservation Experience, a nonprofit conservation corps providing training and a cultural experience to young adults from Europe, Scandinavia and Asia.

The council is utilizing the crews to clear brush and hazardous flammable fuels for defensible space around homes, providing the clearing free of charge under a grant from the Allstate Foundation.

Project coordinator Chris Baker of the American Conservation Experience has worked with his crew over much of California this summer, and was scheduled to work with a Fire Safe Council in Tahoe this week until the Angora fire changed the plan.

“The very community we were supposed to help protect, just burned down,” Baker said.
