Fire tax workshop Monday in Truckee

TRUCKEE “-The Truckee Fire Protection District is asking for public input on keeping services and finances abreast of growth and new development.

Recently the district considered, and ultimately decided to suspend due to protest, a Mello-Roos district specifically taxing five new developments. Those against the new fee asked for a more transparent, public process, resulting in a workshop planned for Monday evening.

In a previous interview, Chief Bryce Keller said the Mello-Roos district would keep the district at the same level of service despite growth, and remains the preferred method to tax only new development.

Pat Davison, executive director of the Contractors Association of Truckee Tahoe, who expressed reservations over the taxation, said she was happy to see a public workshop scheduled.

Jim Porter, attorney representing a number of developments, said he is also happy to see the workshop, but still feels the district hasn’t been as transparent as he’d like.

“It’s not enough to say ‘developers must pay their own way’ and then cram down new fees without data or discussion,” Porter wrote in an e-mail. “Especially when the district just passed a hefty new tax in April.”

The Truckee Fire Protection District will hold a workshop Monday, Jan. 5, from 5:30 to 8:15 p.m. at the Truckee Sanitary District, 12304 Joerger Drive, Truckee.
