First major snow of the season arrives today

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE ” Our first significant snowfall of the season is about to begin a little later today as a decent storm moves into the region.
Winter storm warnings are in effect for the entire Lake Tahoe area from 1 p.m. this afternoon through 4 p.m. Friday afternoon.
Cloudy skies with snow possibly mixed with some rain below 6,000 to 6,500 feet will develop this afternoon before changing to snow at all elevations by evening.
Expect 2 to 4 inches of snow below 7,000 feet with 4 to 8 inches above 7,000 feet by this evening. Highs will be much cooler with 30s at lake level and upper 20s at higher elevations.
Winds will pick up a little from the southwest in the 10 to 15 mph range with some stronger gusts but ridge tops will gust as high as 50 mph. For tonight, snow will pick up in intensity with good accumulations.
In fact total snowfall by Friday night could be in the 8 to 16 inch range around lake level with 12 to 28 inches above 7,000 feet. Lows tonight will drop into the upper 20s. If you have not done so already, get the shovels, snowblowers and ski equipment ready as it will finally be time to make good use of them.
