First Truckee Walking Challenge encourages better health

Sun staff report

TRUCKEE “-Truckee Health 2013 Challenge is putting on the first Truckee Walking Challenge this month.

Teams will be formed through the workplace, schools, service groups and neighborhoods to log their walking mileage. The goal of the Truckee Walking Challenge is to motivate people to participate more regularly in walking for their health and the benefit of the environment.

Pedometers will be supplied to participants along with both online, and on-paper tracking.

Maps will be distributed with walking distances around the community, and we will be broadcasting “weekly walk” locations.

In addition the Truckee Donner Recreation and Park District will be sponsoring a “Truckee Walks Day” May 17. There will be three different distances to participate in, and we will have community groups, like Girls on the Run, leading the different groups.

The Truckee Walking Challenge is supported through a Truckee Tahoe Community Foundation Grant, and is a part of the Truckee Health 2013 Challenge.

Truckee Trails is the lead agency for the Truckee Walking Challenge. They will post information on their website ( concerning upcoming walks and progress to date.

If you have a friend, family, group or business that would be interested in participating, please contact Dr. Sandra Carter at (530) 581-2152.
