Forest Service seeks comment on Meeks Bay Resort improvements

Sun staff report

TAHOMA, Calif. and#8212; The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit invites public comment on a proposal to make water quality, accessibility and utility improvements at Meeks Bay Resort on Lake Tahoe’s West Shore.

According to a press release, the Forest Service would implement a variety of water quality best management practices including slope stabilization using vegetation, constructing storm water infiltration basins, installing bollards or boulders to prevent parking on bare soils, regrading the drive to the main house and creating roof line drip trenches along the cabins and the main house.

The project would improve the accessibility of the parking areas and walkways and provide an accessible walkway to the beach. The Forest Service would also remove power lines from trees and retrofit utility equipment to bring it up to code.

If the project is OK’d, implementation of BMPs and utility work could begin as early as May 2011. The Forest Service anticipates work would be completed by 2012.

Comments are due by March 18. For more information on the proposal and how to submit comments, visit http://www.fs.usda.gov/goto/ltbmu/MeeksBayRetrofit or call Ashley Sommer at (530) 543-2615 or via e-mail at asommer@fs.fed.us.
